I had the pleasure of attending the final chapter for a band I started with a friend, Wynne C Blue, back in 2005. Though I moved on four years after we started, she kept with it until Saturday night.
If you’re familiar with bands, you’ll know it’s not uncommon for personnel to change over the years, and that’s certainly true for Wynne C Blue & The Troublefakers.
We all evolve, and that’s one reason people move on. We get older. Our dreams grow bigger. Or our time gets consumed with meaningful expressions of love and creativity.
What began as a co-fronted band in 2005 was an organic effort, organized around the joyful exploration of common ground and growing in our craft together. When I left the band in 2009, Wynne and I were developing our own artistic identities. Because we allowed the space to move in different directions, we were both able to explore our unique voices with more clarity and less compromise.
The result? More abundance for everybody.
We could have continued on together, but I don’t think I had the skills or self-awareness to know when to lead and when to follow. And in a creative project, when those roles are unclear, it creates a natural tension…the results can be interesting (or exceptional), but also run the risk that no one gets to step into their full power.
In partnerships, the way to make this work is to acknowledge that two people can’t meet all of each other’s needs. Then, when more needs are present, there needs to be time and space for each party to develop, grow, and enrich themselves outside of the relationship.
In a band where everyone is working full-time and has multiple other obligations, time is a precious commodity. And so we moved our separate ways, although we continued to support each other in many ways over the subsequent years.
Looking back, I’m just really proud of Wynne and her accomplishments. I love the clarity of voice she developed over the past 10 years. She has some really unique content and I feel like she really stepped into owning her message and identity. Curious to hear more? You can check her out on Bandcamp: https://wynnecblue.bandcamp.com/
I know that the end of The Troublefakers is also the beginning of a new creative venture for Wynne. It warmed my heart to be in attendance last Saturday at the High Dive with old friends to witness and celebrate the closure of a 14-year journey. I look forward to seeing what is next for my old friend.
