Today I’m pausing to take a look at very top of the Amazon.com charts, which are updated weekly.

As of today, the #1 best-selling and most read book is Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens.

Want to know why a hit works?

The charts don’t always tell the full story, and plenty of authors write with skill, but reviews from real people—who PAID for the joy of reading and owning the story—make it easy to see why this is a winner.

So let’s take a look at some Verified Purchase reviewer comments:

“This is one of the most moving, caring, emotional novels I have ever read.”

“Wow! This books is so filled with emotion.”

“I laughed, I cried (a lot) and most importantly thought differently about life – mine and everyone else’s.”

“You will feel compassion for the main character like you may have never felt before.”

“The story is everything, heartbreaking, heartwarming, lyrical, moving, tragic and uplifting.”

“She is a survivor and what she loved and accomplished was amazing.” (referring to the MC—main character)

“There is tremendous character development throughout the entire story…”

“Besides the author’s remarkable descriptive skill, she shows a depth of knowledge about the spectrum of human emotion in her characters’ behavior and dialogue. It all rings true.

“It all rings true.”

That comment pretty much steals my thunder. This story is a winner, because it rings true. The author, Delia Owens, didn’t hold back from breathing her characters full of her fearless truth. She didn’t hold back from the real stuff that makes life trying, difficult, and inspiring.

The main character, Kya, gave readers someone to connect with on a deep, visceral level. The readers CARE about these characters, because those characters are telling them stories that resonate with their own deepest truths.

Delia Owens’ reward for leaning heavily on fearless truth, as she skillfully wove a tale?

As of today, STILL the #1 selling book on Amazon—a marketplace where that position isn’t bought and paid for by the publisher (see: New York Times Bestsellers).
